Gayatri Mantra – Four Interpretations of a Timeless Vedic Mantra

The Gāyatrī Mantra is one of the most widely recited mantras in the Vedic tradition, forming an integral part of both domestic rituals and spiritual practice. Its earliest source is the Ṛgveda, where it occurs as the tenth mantra of the 62nd sūkta of the Third Maṇḍala, attributed to the ṛṣi Viśvāmitra.

The mantra has a significant place in Vedic practice, featuring in rituals and observances such as upanayana, anupravacanīya-homa, brahma-yajña, upākarma and sandhyā-vandana, as well as numerous other Vedic rituals.

The profound significance of this mantra is also reflected in the commentarial tradition. Sāyaṇācārya, the celebrated 14th-century Vedic commentator from Karnataka, offers four distinct interpretations of the Gāyatrī Mantra.

In this course, these four interpretations are explored in detail, opening up different dimensions of meaning and providing an opportunity to engage more deeply with one of the most important mantras of the Vedic tradition.
